Happy Birthday Leap Year Babies or “Leaplings” !

With this being a leap year, and tomorrow is February 29th…we thought it would be fun to put together a brief blog post about the many ways families celebrated their kids’ birthdays over the years.

This post is dedicated to the 5 million people around the globe who have a birthday on February 29th. We hope you enjoy your special day!

Now, Let’s explore popular ways to celebrate children’s birthdays by decade:

1950s:

Simple Home Celebrations: In the 1950s, children’s birthday parties were often held at home with homemade decorations, games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and classic treats like homemade cake and ice cream.

1960s:

Backyard Barbecues: Backyard parties became more popular in the 1960s, with families firing up the grill for cookouts featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, and soda pop. Games like sack races and three-legged races added to the fun.

1970s:

Themed Parties: The 1970s saw the rise of themed birthday parties, with popular themes including superheroes, cowboys and Indians, and characters from TV shows like Scooby-Doo and Sesame Street. Parents got creative with themed decorations, costumes, and games.

1980s:

Arcade Parties: With the rise of video games in the 1980s, arcade-themed birthday parties became all the rage. Kids would gather at arcades to play games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong, followed by pizza and cake at the local pizza parlor.

1990s:

Slumber parties were a big hit in the 1990s, with kids inviting friends over for overnight celebrations complete with movies, popcorn, and sleeping bags. Activities included makeovers, pillow fights, and telling ghost stories.

2000s:

Themed Play Centers: In the 2000s, themed play centers became popular venues for children’s birthday parties. Indoor play spaces featuring bounce houses, climbing structures, and arcade games offered a convenient and entertaining option for busy parents.

2010s:

DIY Craft Parties: DIY craft parties gained popularity in the 2010s, with parents hosting hands-on crafting activities like pottery painting, jewelry making, and tie-dyeing. These parties encouraged creativity and allowed kids to take home their own handmade creations as party favors.
